steven n'zonzi (sevilla fc/france) - 83 -> 84

n’zonzi, formerly of stoke city and blackburn rovers, has taken his career to another level during his time with sevilla, largely regarded as one of the finest performers in the spanish top flight last season. he had an amazing 2016/17 campaign with sevilla as he was very instrumental in their spectacular start of the season performances which saw them among the top 3 of the liga table for a while.

casemiro (real madrid/brazil) - 83 -> 85

casemiro played 25 games in la liga scoring four goals, including one in el clasico, perhaps his most difficult game because he was overwhelmed by messi’s performance. since his return after a season at porto, he has proved himself to be a key player in the line-up. we can say casemiro is becoming one of the best stoppers in the recent real madrid history.

filipe luís (atlético madrid/brazil) - 85 -> 86

in what was a difficult season for atletico madrid, filipe luis often led the way with his never-say-die attitude. he was brilliant going forward as evidenced by his tally of 3 goals and 7 assists for the colchoneros in the past season. he completed 74 dribbles, more than any other atletico player and often saved his best for the big games. the brazilian was atletico's best defender this past season.

isco (real madrid/spain) - 84 -> 86

this year was no exception and the german midfielder contributed a lot to the four titles conquered during the year. isco has been arguably the second-best player in the team for most of 2017, floating between the lines, alternating positions with midfield team-mates and finding the right pass or finish at the moments they're needed, he's so difficult for opposition teams to stop, and zidane has rewarded that step up in performance.

koke (atlético madrid/spain) - 84 -> 86

the spain international scored four goals and set up eight more in 34 league starts to help atletico finish third in la liga in the 2016-17 campaign and qualify for next season's champions league group stages. koke’s passing, versatility and work rate have made him one of the first names on simeone’s team sheet week in and week out over the past several seasons.

marcelo (real madrid/brazil) - 86 -> 87

2016/17 was a highly fruitful campaign for marcelo as he won the la liga and champions league double with real madrid. on a personal level the player’s playmaking abilities came to the fore, as he bagged 3 goals and 14 assists in 47 matches across all competitions. he attempted 1.8 dribbles every 90 minutes and was dispossessed only 0.8 times per game. the once error-prone defender has improved with each passing year and in the last season, finally found the right balance between attack and defence.

jan oblak (atlético madrid/slovenia) - 87 -> 88

no goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets in la liga than jan oblak. his 15 shutouts are a huge reason atleti have conceded fewer goals than any other team in the league, and he's been the most dominant force between the posts in all of spain. marc-andre ter stegen, sergio rico and sergio asenjo (before his injury) all have legitimate shouts, but oblak has been the man this year, just as he was last year when he picked up la liga's best goalkeeper award.

toni kroos (real madrid/germany) - 88 -> 89

at the bernabeu, kroos has only gone on to solidify his reputation as a creative force, with his record in this past season being nothing short of remarkable. the german midfielder made 48 appearances across all competitions for real madrid in the 2016/17 season, with a return of 4 goals and 17 assists. he's been nearly perfect for madrid this year, and trails just luis suarez in assists on the season. only two players in the entire league (samuel umtiti and rafinha) have a better pass completion rate than his insane 92.2% this year.

sergio ramos (real madrid/spain) - 89 -> 90

the majority of ramos' goals this season (10 in total) came when real were not in a winning position. he was their saviour and the catalyst for a historic double. although his defensive side of the game is often criticised for not being as good as his work on the other side of the field, ramos looked like he had worked hard on curbing his rash streak. in the recently concluded season, ramos made 1.6 tackles and 3.7 clearances per game for the european champions.

lionel messi (barcelona/argentina) - 93 -> 94

top of la liga's scoring charts, with a hatful of assists to go along with it, messi and the other two fellas that make up barcelona's msn trio have dragged barça this entire season. time and time again when barcelona needed him he's stepped up, and on no bigger occasion than his incredible clasico brace back in april to help beat real madrid 3-2. there's no question he belongs in this team.
