during his 10 years in madrid, pepe played on teams that won three champions league trophies and three la liga titles, but had fallen down the pecking order for zinedine zidane in recent months in part due to injuries. the portugal international made 18 appearances during the 2016-17 campaign, now he has completed his move to besiktas after his contract at real madrid came to an end.

 

top 7: wayne rooney (everton) - 84 -> 82

when you look back on 2016/17, rooney was never a fixture in the most important games even when he was fit and ready to play. had featured in the starting line-up in the premier league only 15 times, with 11 of his teammates making more appearances through the season while a whopping 18 of them appeared more times than the skipper in the europa league. wayne rooney is always a great player, we do hope he will enjoy a nice career time in everton.

 

top 6: mesut ozil (arsenal) - 89 -> 88

german midfielder mesut ozil had a disappointing 2016-17 campaign with arsenal, although the german still managed nine assists and eight goals. ozil, though, did fail to live up to the exceptionally high standard he set himself the season before - when he grabbed 19 assists. ozil didn't have the follow-up year that we expected.

 

top 5: jesus navas (manchester city) - 80 -> 78

navas appeared a total of 36 times for city in all competitions, supplying five assists, yet failing to hit the target on a single occasion. the spaniard ended up being used as an auxiliary right back which underlined the extent of the problems guardiola has had in the position this season.

 

top 4: per mertesacker (arsenal) - 83 -> 81

top 2: moussa sissoko (tottenham hotspur) - 80 -> 77

moussa sissoko was arguably the worst signing of the 2016/17 season, with tottenham spending over £17million per chance created or goal on the frenchman. he endured a disappointing debut campaign for tottenham hotspur in 2016-17. the france international failed to make an impact at white hart lane, was able to make only eight starts for spurs last season, with a further 17 appearances coming as a substitute.

 

top 1: daniel sturridge (liverpool) - 84 -> 82

daniel sturridge has undergone a torrid time with injury throughout his career, making 20 appearances for jürgen klopp's side during the 2016/17 campaign. largely unavailable during the top-four run in, the england international has found it hard to cement a place in the starting xi and rediscover the form that saw him as one of the premier league's most potent marksmen.
